The buyer might come across two marble look porcelain tiles that look very similar. You might think they are almost exactly the same. Because they have the same white background, similar gray texture and similar luster. Then place these two tiles near a window or under warmer exhibition lights, and one of the surfaces will start to appear more distinct in texture compared to the other.

This difference is not always related to the design files.

In modern ceramic surface technology, more and more processes focus on the materials used in the printing around them: digital glazes, colored glazes, adhesives, colored inks, white effects, gloss effects, and other surface materials. These terms might just sound unexciting to the ear when they appear in the catalogues. But it is precisely these materials that often determine the tactile quality of the final tiles, whether it is like stone, plastic, paper, or a texture between the two.

SICER's Digital R&D Lab, reported by Ceramic World Web in August 2025, developed a Water Based series made with glues, glazes, engobes, coloured inks, and glossy and white effects. The same report said these water-based digital materials use water and water-soluble solvents, with a lower organic phase than conventional systems. That is a technical line, but it points to a direction buyers already feel in the market: surfaces are expected to look richer, smell cleaner in production, and carry more subtle effects without turning every tile into a loud decorative product.

The white effect is easy to underestimate

White may seem like a simple concept, but it is not.

On marble-patterned tiles, the white areas are not empty spaces; instead, they make the texture on the floor appear more realistic and credible. If the white is too stark, the entire tile may feel dull and uninteresting; if the white is too soft, the textures of other colors on top may appear dirty. If the white effect does not coordinate with the glaze, the tile will look like a printed painting rather than a genuine stone surface.

At this point, digital ceramic materials come in handy. The white effect or gloss effect may not significantly change the pattern itself, but it will alter the way the pattern is presented on the surface. This difference is particularly noticeable when buyers compare an ordinary frontal photo with a sample under oblique light.

The best marble effect products are often not those that are flashy and ostentatious, but those that have a harmonious unity between the background, texture, and surface treatment.

A tactile surface has to be controlled, not just added

A new surface technology may exert its effect through texture, and it is also the area where problems may arise.

The slight raised effect along the edge of the stone pattern can make the tiles look more natural. The pattern part is made of light-colored glossy material, which can make the surface present a texture similar to wet stone. The dry particle effect can make the wall tiles more tactile. However, if this effect is too obvious, buyers will instead notice the craftsmanship details rather than the design itself.

This is usually a bad sign.

The requirements for surfaces vary for different areas such as the floor of a hotel lobby, the display panels in an exhibition hall, and the walls of a bathroom. The dealer may be able to appreciate a striking sample effect, but the product still needs to be sold, cleaned, photographed, packaged, and reordered.

Therefore, we prefer to evaluate the special surface effects under ordinary light first. Place the sample on the table and move it close to the window. Take a photo from above, and then take another one from a standing angle. Gently touch the marble texture with your fingertips. If this effect can only be shown in close-up shots, then it may be more suitable for social media rather than for the display of products in the exhibition hall..

Lower-impact materials still have to sell as good tiles

Water-based digital glaze and related materials are interesting partly because of the sustainability direction. Lower organic emissions and reduced odour during production matter to factories and to brands that care about cleaner manufacturing stories.

However, overseas importers still raise a practical question: Can these tiles be sold?

This is the true balance. Only when the tiles have an appropriate appearance, stable combustion, and can give buyers confidence in repeated orders, can these technologies be widely applied. No distributor is willing to explain surface issues by referring to more advanced materials.

In our export work, the strongest technology stories are the quiet ones. A buyer does not need to explain every glue, glaze, or engobe to a contractor. The buyer only needs the surface to behave: clean white, believable vein, controlled gloss, no strange surface noise, and a repeat order that does not feel like a different product.
